So the launch of the new Mercedes CLA has taken place not at a car show but at the Las Vegas CES show for new electronics. This tells you all you need to know about Mercedes-Benz latest offering.
This car has taken over the mantel of the S Class of introducing us to new Mercedes technology. Don’t get me wrong the new CLA looks good and will no doubt be a good car in its own right coming from the German engineers. Its slightly bigger than its predecessor and had definitely got a sportier theme throughout with a more aerodynamic design with a long stretched bonnet featuring power domes. The standard cabin features a pair of seven-inch displays – one for the instruments and other for the infotainment system. Customers can upgrade to two 10.25-inch screens for a more eye-catching view.
Now to the tech, Mercedes describe the car as the ultimate wearable…the new CLA. The upgraded MBUX which first launched in the A Class has innovative features such as augmented reality for navigation, the upgraded system has the ability to understand indirect voice commands and operational gestures. This means the can distinguish between different conversations and remembers whether it’s the passenger or driver has said “Hey Mercedes”. It also promises to understand more complex questions such as “How did Arsenal Play?” or “What is the fat content of Avocados”
The new interior assistant has a robust gesture system which intuitively senses when you are reaching over for something on the passenger seat and illuminates it for you to see and deactivates once your hand has moved.
The interior assistant includes a personal favourites function, which is accessed by holding a hand over the centre console with the index and middle finger spread in a V-shape. A favourite command could be “‘navigate me home.” The driver and front passenger can even assign different favourites to the same hand position.
There is even a fit bit type service called the energising coach which is based on an intelligent algorithm . If the driver is wearing the new Mercedes Vivoactive watch also debuted at the show personal stats will be provided such as stress levels and quality of sleep. The users pulse rate is also show on the Media display.
This is definitely a car embracing the future and will definitely appeal to Mercedes target market for this vehicle which is the the young first time Mercedes buyer who needs as much tech as possible to keep up with the world. This is the iPhone generation.
The new CLA will of course embrace autonomous driving features and comes standard with an Active Brake Assist system that can automatically slow the car to avoid collisions with vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. The optional Driver Assistance Package loads the vehicle with helpful driving aids.
Not a lot has been said about engines the launch car was the CLA 250 featuring a 221bhp four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine, driven through a seven-speed automatic gearbox
The car will be available in June and we will be taking order on these by the beginning of February.
