The BMW 8 series has been unveiled for the first time before Le mans race. The car set to be a rival for Aston Martin DB11 has put on a bit off muscle since its early concept but still gives a sports car feel with swooping lines and complemented by the thinnest headlights on a BMW ever. This should be a design language we get used to as BMW suggest they will be following suit with the rest of the range.
So what’s inside the new BMW 8 series well the 840 Xdrive has the 3.0 Litre 316BHP engine and the range topping M850i has a revamped 4.4 Litre with 532BHP and a 0-60 at of 3.2 secs.
BMW believes that the performance focus of the 8 Series means it can fill a gap in the luxury sports car market between models such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé and Porsche 911.
The car offers a range of driver assistance systems, including active cruise control, offered as standard; and features such as lane keeping assist are optional as part of the Driving Assistant Professional pack.
The interior is typically BMW premium, quality and functional. It features a central touchscreen, that is tilted towards the driver. Sarah Lessmann BMW’s 8 Series Global Product manager insists this is “very important for a sports car” the car also is swathed in leather to emphasise the car’s premium quality, and options include a diamond-cut glass gear selector and other controls.
Although we preferred the look of the concept the 8 Series still promises to be a key car in the BMW range and the German car company are hoping it sells more than the previous 8 series that only sold 30,000 models.
