It’s almost that time and you may have already noticed the signs popping up around town. Birmingham’s is here Clean Air Zone is here and is here to stay. But how will you know if your car is going to be affected. We tell you why here but first some background.
Set to be enforced from July 2020 the zone sits within the following area’s Ladywood, Hockley, Lee bank, Highgate, Digbeth and the City Centre inside the A4540 ring road, but not on the road itself.
Vehicles with high nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions, are affected by the clean air zone so it’s not all cars yet. However there are plans to ban all cars from 2031.
The charges in place will be £8 for cars and £50 for buses and HGVs driving in Central Birmingham.
In general charges apply to non-compliant vehicles - diesels manufactured before 2015 and petrol cars made before 2006.
However there are a couple ways to check if your car will be compliant and avoid the charges. As there have been reports that the newly launched Birmingham checker has been giving the wrong information you can always check with the Transport for London System which has been around for much longer.
